Hannah Mermaid: The Power of Story & Fantasy
My Muse, Hannah Fraser: artist, innovator, underwater dancer, inspirational eco-activist
Once upon a time, a little girl had a dream. But what started out as fantasy…
…transformed into something much, much deeper. Something extraordinarily powerful.
PASSION CONNECTED TO PURPOSE:
“…By bridging land and sea, as a Mermaid With A Cause, we were able to appeal to people’s fantasy and empower them with a new possible reality.”
~Hannah Fraser, professional mermaid, designer, and Servant of the Sea
There are so many reasons why this beautiful human is one of my She-Ros. One of my Muses. I mean, my adoration of her started out as the mer-licious obvious. I was searching for video footage of underwater shipwrecks while getting ready to share my short story about hunting for buried gold and discovering unexpected treasure.1
I found something even better. A real-live, swimming, breathing, breath-holding MERMAID swimming in underwater shipwrecks!
I was hooked. But Hannah Fraser is so much more than an artist, dancer, costume designer, and model.
Her dream is like my dream.
This is the fantasy I have harbored for decades: not merely to touch people with my arts and passions, not merely to inspire creatively, but to find a way to really DO SOMETHING with it.
Something that alters reality for the better.
Something that inspires on a much deeper and expansive level.
I don’t know what that is yet. I’m still delving and pushing aside reeds and digging in muck and searching.2
In the meanwhile, I let today’s Muse be my guide.
SENDING OUT RIPPLES TO CHANGE REALITY
“…A common response is, ‘Och! I don’t want to see dolphins being killed. But I support what you do.’ It seems that many of us are unwilling to face reality when it’s ugly. So how do we galvanize mass awareness and action when something threatens our very existence?”
I will let one of my Muses tell you how, in her own brilliant, sea-deep words. This is one of the myriad superpowers of STORY, and why Hannah Mermaid is one of my She-Ros:

MANTAS LAST DANCE - the viral film that got manta rays put on the protected species list.
THEY MADE ANOTHER FILM in the hopes of changing the perceptions around the ocean’s most feared and vilified denizens: THE SHARK. Here my she-ro swims cage-less, dances with, and even tickles these apex predators who have come back again and again to enjoy contact with her. All in the efforts of stopping the Shark Cull to make beaches more “safe” for humans. (And of course, because it’s awe-inspiring, gorgeous, and fun!)
MAKE CREATIVITY PAY - A deeper dive about pursuing her passions as her profession, with tons more behind-the-scenes footage and stories.
Thank you, Hannah Fraser, Mermaid Extraordinaire, for being a force of nature who has learned how to meld with and become One with all of Creation.
Last look…le-swim, le-swirrrrl, le-swoon… In this moment, when I can’t dance on my legs as I recover from knee surgery, I watch and I dream. I remember and look forward. I am inspired the put on my Water Playlist, get down on the floor, and move. It looks a lot like this:
Thank you for helping me Believe.

“I must be a mermaid. I have no fear of depths and a great fear of shallow living.” ~Anais Nin.
Alas. I am asthmatic, so I have to live vicariously and play-pretend to make my mer-fantasies come true. This is one of the ways I swim deep-deep down, combining art, imagination & activism. The first post in my series on THE UNDERWATER REALM OF TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY.
Because if you don't know, you can't KNOW. And if you can't understand me, how can we possibly connect on anything but a surface level?
